Happy Low Carb-iversary To Me! 17 Years of Low Carb Success

Dana Carpender, Managing Editor of CarbSmart.comNot really an article, just an announcement:  Yesterday (September 4th) was my Low Carb-iversary.  I went low carb the day after Labor Day 1995, so I have now been on low carb for 17 years.  Since I will be 54 in 6 weeks or so, that means I have been low carb for 31% of my life now.

I have no arthritis.  I still have all my teeth, with no cavities and no gum disease.  I can read very fine print without glasses.  As I write this, I am waiting for That Nice Boy I Married to come home and do our Slow Burn heavy resistance work out with me before our low carb dinner.

My recent bloodwork indicates that my low carb diet is doing me no harm, and much good, with super-low triglycerides, high HDL, and a very healthy HbA1c, which, for a girl who has been diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome, is no small thing.  And no, my kidneys have not asploded.

I miss nothing.  I love the low carb food I eat, and look at most of what is in my local grocery store with a detached surprised — “My gosh, you mean people think that’s food?  They eat that?”  I never have to go hungry.  Even when I can’t get to food, my energy level is fine, because I easily access my fat stores.

Other than asking That Nice Boy I Married out on that first date (yeah, I asked him), and marrying him five years later, axing the carbs from my diet is the best call I ever made.

I will eat this way for the rest of my life.  I look forward to it.

  1. Congrats on your Carb-iversary! I’ve been reading your stuff & making your recipes for many years. With healthy a low carb lifestyle I think we’ll both be around a long time. Thanks for all the good advice, recipes, articles, podcasts and humor!

  2. …forgot to say and books!

  3. Way to go! Happy Anniversary! 🙂

  4. Congratulations woman! Thanks for inspiring and helping so many of us as you’ve journeyed along!!! You look “mahvelous”!

  5. Congrats not only for finding a low carb diet, but for creating a low carb lifestyle that you you genuinely enjoy. I like low carb too, but at this point it is for maintenance as opposed to weight loss. I believe mental attitude is more important than anything else when it comes to health and fitness, and your positive attitude is inspiring.

  6. Hooray for you! That is awesome!
I was wondering – did you get your bone density checked, by any chance? I am 45 and have been told i have osteopenia. I’m hoping to reverse my bone loss through diet, supplements, and exercise

    • I haven’t. My doctor hasn’t recommended a DEXA because I haven’t gone through menopause. However, I’m now on bioidentical hormones, so I’m not going to go through your standard menopause. I probably should ask for one, since osteoporosis runs in the family.
